Initially the proceedings deal with various aspects of non-ruminant nutrition; an update on energy evaluation systems for pigs is followed by new developments in the interaction between the immune response and nutritional factors; this theme was extended by considering tryptophan specifically in piglet diets from both a requirement and health status perspective. Subsequently there is a paper on nutrition of the newly hatched chick and, finally one on aquaculture: current issues for feed manufacturers. A general section covers alternative protein sources for piglets and calves, followed by a consideration of the amino acid content of soya bean meal, still the most important vegetable protein source globally.
Papers on ruminants covered the influence of essential fatty acids on reproductive function, liver function in dairy cows and consequences of shortening the dry period. A common theme of accelerated calf-rearing follows with papers on evaluation of the effect of changes in nutrition during the pre-weaning period on performance, effects on growth of dairy heifers from birth to ten weeks of age and growth performance of Holstein-Friesian heifer calves reared using three milk replacer feeding regimes.
The final section is the annual legislation update for feed manufacturers followed by a paper on animal agriculture and global food supply.
